The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Music Generations

Marking two decades since the legendary game hit the market in North America, giving players everywhere the opportunity to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try telling that anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow coloured notes scrolling down the screen in time with a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, producing the sensation of an authentic performance.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise which made a significant influence for many of the artists featured, introducing decades-old groups to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, album purchases and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish group one featured act included their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist remembers how the series revived older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, however once it got included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still unreleased in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the band as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and several knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Music's biggest acts soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly earned the group more money than any of their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, and sales of their songs rose significantly during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention performed at increased tempo while hitting every one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before top acts at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of being a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

Most installments were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on their first music game. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be similar to sports games where you can update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to persist for future fans.”
